Faculty Development, Instructional Design & Distance Learning Research

McPheeters, D. (2009), Engaging young minds in 21st century education.

Abstract: Young minds disconnect from an educational platform no longer relevant to the direction toward which culture is heading. Current research emphasizes the benefit of increased engagement experienced in virtual learning environments but lacks demonstrating actual improvement in standards-based learning achievement. This paper reviews current research, proposing a study to determine whether multi-user virtual environments are key to educating the next generation. This study offers random sampled, disadvantaged elementary students a 3D virtual environment to determine whether standards-based achievement will improve over traditional classroom settings alone. Conclusive results either way will impact education positively by enabling focused attention on the part of educators, thus benefitting the community they serve by saving time and money trying yet unproven methods.

McPheeters, D. (2009), An examination of online learning in multi-user virtual environments (MUVE)

Abstract: This paper reviews 21st century research literature about the use of three dimensional (3D) multi-user virtual environment (MUVE) technology to engage young minds to learn. The many benefits of MUVE technologies are reviewed herein as supported by an emerging body of research. However, the literature exposes three major challenges concerning the increased use of new technologies in education: access to updated hardware, equal student access outside the classroom, and teacher proficiency. The most popular MUVE – Second Life – is rich with professional development opportunities, demonstrating how 3D platforms eliminate the challenges noted above, by providing an immersive environment where teachers learn technology integration strategies hands-on with peers. This paper outlines reasons schools should integrate MUVE technologies in their curriculum.

McPheeters, D. (2010), Creating a virtual classroom for NAU’s ed tech program.

Abstract: NAU enjoys a reputation for being on the forefront of distance education technology. However, advanced trends in technology have led hundreds of Universities to investigate multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs). Constructivist learning strategies fit well within 3D virtual classrooms where students manipulate their Avatars and construct objects collaboratively. NAU does not yet offer courses in a 3D MUVE. This paper outlines a course to be designed and taught within Second Life, the most popular MUVE used by Universities. Virtual courses enable the highest and best use of resources by offering greater flexibility to more students. Virtual technologies save time and money while offering students greater varieties of learning experiences. This paper explores the enhanced instructional strategies available in 3D MUVEs.
